The Peoria Unified School District held their annual District Spelling Bee on Thursday, Jan. 18, where top spellers from across the district competed in front of their peers. The winner of this year’s Annual District Spelling Bee is Salem Galaviz from Marshall Ranch Elementary School. Galaviz won with the word “asthmatic.”
The seven runners-up include:
• Danica Chen (eighth grade) from Sunset Heights Elementary School
• Jaelyn Clark (eighth grade) from Sundance Elementary School
• Safeerah Manjra (seventh grade) from Oasis Elementary School
• Nick McGuire (seventh grade) from Peoria Traditional School
• Millie Phillips (eighth grade) from Frontier Elementary School
• Scott Sinex (eighth grade) from Vistancia Elementary School
• Darla White (eighth grade) from Sun Valley Elementary School
The winner and the runners-up will compete in the Maricopa County Region IV Spelling Bee hosted on February 8 at the district office of Washington Elementary School District. The winners of the Regional Bee will move on to the state-level Arizona Spelling Bee in March followed by the Scripps National Spelling Bee held in National Harbor, MD, in the summer of 2024.
