From its history settled by soldiers from Fort McDowell in 1870, Cave Creek has carved a very Western history as part of the Valley of the Sun.
The town, with a population of less than 5,000, has a vibrant arts and culture scene that features the "Hidden in the Hills" event hosted by the Snoran Arts League.
It also is home to numerous bars and restaurants for weekend cruisers and events like the Cave Creek Rodeo Days and Bike week.
Neighboring Carefree is slightly smaller, with about 3,700 residents, where the history goes back to a proposal for an upscale residential community from the 1950s.
Once home to a famous Western movie studio, the town is an enclave that borders Cave Creek and Scottsdale.
