My Company and Title Is.. Licensed Massage Therapist and Corrective Exercise Specialist at The Rooted Body.

A Typical Day in My Life
Includes… On a good morning that I don’t hit snooze too many times, it starts with coffee and meditation either on my yoga mat, back porch, or on the trail with my Boxer, Dempsey. After that it’s the chaos of getting my 4-year-old and 13-year-old to school, and myself to the office. My work day consists of assessing clients, treating them with bodywork and exercises, giving “homework” for them to help treat themselves at home, and then usually phone calls and other business admin tasks. After that I pick up the kids from school, help with homework, make dinner and hang out with my kids. And we usually FaceTime with my husband before bed.

My favorite thing about living/working in the North 32nd area is… The North 32nd area itself! I live in Uptown and sometimes hit the Mountain Preserve on my way in. The gentrification effort going into the area is fantastic and everything you could want or need is 15 minutes or less away!

My favorite movie I could never get tired of watching is… The Notebook. Normally mushy romance isn’t my favorite and it’s weird that I like a movie that makes me ugly cry every time I watch it. But it is also very funny, and that movie gave me the idea to name my son Noah, so it’s sentimental for that reason.

My family… Is adaptive? And awesome! We are a military family which means we’ve moved a lot and my husband has been gone for about half of our marriage. So we take our family time seriously. My sons and I have been geographically separated from my husband for almost a year and a half now. He was deployed for a year overseas and now he is stationed in Texas BUT he retires in May and we SETTLE in Phoenix, which is why I’ve started my business in the North 32nd area!

The business lesson I learned the hard way is… Be very mindful of whether you are using reply or reply ALL in an e-mail.

When I was younger I wanted to be… I wanted to be a journalist since I was in the fifth grade. I have a Broadcasting degree from the Walter Cronkite School at ASU. I wanted to make a difference in the world and that is how I saw myself doing it. But broadcast journalism wasn’t what I envisioned so I didn’t pursue it after I got my degree. So here I am, making a difference in a different way!

The last thing that made me laugh out loud was… My 4-year-old mooning his dad on FaceTime…or anything else he does. The child is a natural entertainer and constantly laughing.
The perfect day would be… Oh definitely at a beach cabin or mountain cabin with friends and family. Starting with yoga outdoors. Add in hiking, fishing, kayaking, surfing, playing games, cooking, cold beverages, lots of laughter, music and ending with a fire beneath a clear, star filled sky.

My first job was… Aside from babysitting, I served lunch and cleaned up at an assisted living facility. Then I would sit and talk with the residents, especially the ones that never got visitors. I never liked history in school but I’ve always loved learning about it from the people that lived it.

I’m currently working on… Building my business locally! Since I’m new to the area I’m working on meeting people and getting involved in the community and building my clientele. I’m working on putting together some workshops on the importance of fitness and balance as we age, women’s strength, and (along with another trainer at Empower Wellness Studio-Alex) a Super-She camp for young women. I’m really excited to meet new people and help them feel great so they can live their best lives!

The best gift I’ve ever received was… My engagement diamond. It was my husband’s mothers, and his grandmother’s before that. He and his brother were both married before and it wasn’t offered to them either time. So it was a very special moment for my mother-in-law to want me to have it. Of course it also comes with a lot of anxiety that I had better not ever lose it!

The actor I would want to play me in a movie of my life is… Reese Witherspoon, Elizabeth Banks, or Kristen Bell…they’re all a little girl-next-door but goofy.

My words of wisdom for aspiring business owners… Find a mentor…or several and have a plan. It’s so much harder to learn everything as you go. Have someone that can guide you in getting started and that you can shamelessly ask all of the dumb questions.
