The local Pat Tillman Post 117 has recently moved into new digs at 3230 E. Thunderbird Rd. on 32nd St & Thunderbird. We will be having a grand opening for the public on October 20 from 10am to 10pm with our dedication ceremony at 11am. We have fun events for the day scheduled including a live band. We would love to have everyone come out enjoy the day, learn about the American Legion and ask questions about what we here at the Pat Tillman Post 117 are doing and even how to join. The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veteran’s organization. Focusing on service to veterans, servicemembers and communities, the Legion evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the United States. Membership swiftly grew to over 1 million, and local posts sprang up across the country. Today, membership stands at over 2 million in more than 13,000 posts worldwide. The posts are organized into 55 departments: one each for the 50 states, along with the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico and the Philippines. Over the years, the Legion has influenced considerable social change in America, won hundreds of benefits for veterans and produced many important programs for children and youth.
To be eligible for membership in The American Legion, you need to have been assigned to at least one day of federal active duty service any time during the eligibility periods as determined by U.S. Government, and received an honorable discharge/discharge under honorable conditions, or currently serving in one of the U.S. Armed Forces. People have a misconception that you must have had to have served in the military to join. There are other ways to join our organization through The Sons of the American Legion and the Auxiliary.
