The city of Peoria celebrated the unveiling of the Centennial Plaza Decades Walk expansion project, which is a vertical monument that honors historic local, state, and national events that occurred between 2013 through 2021.
“Peoria’s Centennial Plaza was created to celebrate the 100th anniversary of our great state. The Decades Walk is Peoria’s unique display of the rich history we have as a community, as a state, and as a nation,” says Mayor Cathy Carlat. “This expansion of the Decades Walk gives our residents the opportunity to discover and honor our history at their leisure as they enjoy the beauty of the surroundings.”
The first phase of the Centennial Plaza Decades Walk was unveiled in 2012 in coordination with the state of Arizona’s Centennial Celebration, featuring historic events from 1912 through 2012. The expansion builds upon the first phase with a new, vertical monument that honors events that occurred from 2013 through 2021. This expanded display includes notable events such as the opening of Pioneer Community Park, the dedication of the Senator John McCain Vietnam Veterans Memorial Plaza, and the historic passage of the “Brandon Act,” named in honor of Peoria resident, Brandon Caserta. New landscaping, signage, and directional wayfinding has been added, along with an additional monument that allows for future expansion.
The Centennial Plaza Decades Walk is located at Peoria’s Centennial Park, 9875 N. 85th Ave. Learn more at peoriaaz.gov.
