While the world seems to be spinning out of control around us, it is time we take back ownership of those things that are within our power to control. Since so many of us are now working from and spending more time at home, we can make sure our environment is as healthy as we can make it, especially in our vehicles.
Experts have now determined that coronavirus can remain active on plastic and stainless steel for up to 72 hours, and we certainly know that our vehicles are made up of plenty of those surfaces. The good news is that the virus can be effectively inactivated if the surfaces are properly cleaned.
Vehicle Hotspots
Kelly Blue Book suggests that car owners, dealerships, rental car companies and ride share entities use hand sanitizers and disinfecting wipes to wipe down the interior of a vehicle and any other area that could be considered a high-touch area such as steering wheels, door handles, control buttons, seat belts, mirrors and radios.
However, even if used correctly and frequently, these wipes are normally unable to reach far enough into porous surfaces such as upholstery and nooks and crannies to address the contaminants embedded in those materials and areas. The contaminants embedded in hard-to-reach areas can contribute to the residual less-than-clean smell of the vehicle.
Products to Use and Avoid
Alcohol solutions that contain at least 70 percent alcohol are effective against coronavirus, according to the CDC. Whatever you do, don’t use bleach or hydrogen peroxide on the inside of your car, as they will likely damage your car’s upholstery. Avoid using ammonia-based cleaners on car touch screens, as they can damage their anti-glare coating.
Ask Your Dealership or Local Auto Service-Related Business
Check with your local dealership, auto detailer, service center or car wash to see if they are offering any type of healthy vehicle program or proprietary product line that is designed to clean both the air and surfaces inside your vehicle. Even during stay-at-home orders, they may be offering mobile detailing or cleaning services to meet your needs. You can trust that your local auto business has strongly vetted any product that it offers, which can give you confidence in a healthier commute for you and your family.
