In 2015, Councilman Jim Waring and former District 3 Councilman Bill Gates formed the North 32nd Street Coalition*, bringing together local business leaders and residents to address the declining conditions in the area. This coalition led to the creation of a citizen-driven initiative focused on beautifying and revitalizing the neighborhood. The project not only improved the area’s appearance but also fostered the growth of several new small businesses, many of which are owned by residents deeply committed to the community.
Fast forward to 2024, these businesses are building on the foundation laid by the North 32nd Street Coalition by partnering with the City of Phoenix to launch a new initiative that will further strengthen the community and support small local businesses.
About the Sheaborhood Business Alliance
In any thriving community, the strength and unity of local businesses are essential for fostering a vibrant and resilient economy. Iliana Dodge, co-owner of Black Rock Bouldering Gym, recognized this need, leading to the creation of the Sheaborhood Business Alliance. This platform is designed to unite and support neighborhood businesses, fostering a stronger and more connected community.
The Alliance unites a dynamic group of passionate local entrepreneurs. Dedicated to enhancing both the economic and social aspects of our community by providing valuable resources, networking opportunities, and promotional events, the Alliance intends to help local businesses thrive and grow.
“When we come together as a community of businesses, we not only uplift each other but also build a stronger, more connected neighborhood.” – Iliana Dodge, Chair of Sheaborhood Business Alliance
Unifying our Community: First Fridays in the Sheaborhood

“Events like First Friday are a fantastic way to highlight the incredible talent and dedication of our local businesses. It’s all about coming together to celebrate and support one another.” – Jenny Zink, Co-Chair of the Sheaborhood Business Alliance
A variety of local establishments throughout the neighborhood participating in the First Friday event is a testament to the Alliance’s commitment to community and commerce.
