Is your child a budding author with a tale to tell? The Peoria Public Library system is inviting young writers to let their imaginations soar with the announcement of the StoryWalk Story Writing Contest. Children aged between 6 to 8, 9 to 10, and 11 to 12 are encouraged to submit their original picture books for a chance to have their works featured across all three StoryWalks in Peoria.
Originating in 2007, StoryWalk is an innovative concept developed by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT, in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. It is a unique blend of outdoor play and reading, designed to spark children’s imaginations and encourage physical activity. StoryWalk installations, which have been set up in 50 states and 13 countries, typically feature laminated pages from a children’s book attached to wooden stakes or metal stands along an outdoor path. As participants stroll along the trail, they are directed to the next page in the story and encouraged to engage in a related activity. This innovative approach offers everyone the chance to experience the library in an unconventional setting, merging the joy of reading with the beauty of nature.
The contest will run from June 1 through July 31, with applications available from June 1 at all local Peoria Public Libraries. The contest provides an exciting opportunity for children to showcase their creative writing skills, with the potential to see their stories come to life in the community parks.
Every page of the selected story will be displayed along the walking paths at all three Peoria Community Parks (Paloma, Rio Vista, and Pioneer), offering an immersive reading experience for all park visitors. This is a unique opportunity for young authors to contribute to their community and inspire others with their creativity.

Encouraging creativity, promoting literacy, and fostering a love for the outdoors, the StoryWalk Story Writing Contest is not only an opportunity for children to express themselves but also a chance to engage with their community in a meaningful way. So, kids, get your creative hats on and start writing your stories!
