In an effort to honor and support young philanthropists within their community, the Tempe Community Council has launched the Young Humanitarian Scholarship & Award. This annual accolade shines a spotlight on a graduating high school senior who has devoted time and energy to better their community through volunteer work, philanthropy, and humanitarianism.
The award, backed by Tempe philanthropists Jenny Norton and Bob Ramsey of the Ramsey Social Justice Foundation, offers a one-time $2,000 scholarship. The funds are designed to be used for tuition or other expenses associated with secondary education or training. This generous support acknowledges the passion, dedication, and commitment of young humanitarians, eager to effect positive change in their community.
Applications for the award can be submitted by the students themselves, or they can be nominated by an adult leader who has worked directly with them. Eligible applicants must live, serve, or attend high school within the Tempe city boundaries and plan to graduate in 2023. They must also be enrolling for the fall 2023 semester at a post-secondary education and/or training institution.
More than just academic achievement, the Young Humanitarian Scholarship & Award seeks to recognize students who exhibit an active commitment to unpaid volunteer efforts during their middle and high school years. They should demonstrate a genuine passion to help others and display humanitarian principles through their actions and deeds.
Candidates will be evaluated based on their sustained service and passion to help others. While the value in short-term service efforts is recognized, those with focused and sustained service efforts will be held in higher regard.
Finalists for the award will be asked to participate in personal interviews in July. The recipient of the Young Humanitarian Scholarship & Award will be announced at the 40th Annual Don Carlos Humanitarian Awards event on Wednesday, September 27, which they will be required to attend.
Nominations for the Young Humanitarian Scholarship & Award must be submitted or received by Monday, June 12. To submit a nomination or for more information, contact the Tempe Community Council at 480-858-2310, or visit tempecommunitycouncil.org/don-carlos/how-to-nominate/young-humanitarian. This is an incredible opportunity for Tempe’s young humanitarians to receive recognition and support for their dedication to community betterment.
